COVID-19 Grants: John Howard Society of London and District

The John Howard Society of London and District (JHS London), is a not-for-profit, charitable organization that works with individuals who are at risk of, or who have come into conflict with the law. The John Howard Society strives for effective, just and humane responses to crime and its causes.

As an essential service, JHS London’s office remains open despite the pandemic and continues to provide critical justice and social services. Serving some of the most vulnerable individuals in our community, many of JHS London’s clients are experiencing poverty and homelessness, unable to find shelter during the pandemic as beds are full all over the city.

“Our clients usually need a lot of support under normal circumstances; however, the pandemic has created significant challenges for these individuals with many organizations having to close their doors,” says Taghrid Hussain, Executive Director of JHS London. “We are proud that our agency has been able to remain operational and continues to serve our community during this unprecedented time.”

Thanks to a grant from the LCF COVID-19 Response Fund, JHS London has been able to continue serving their clients, remotely through the purchase of a Zoom license, and in-person with the installation of plexiglass barriers and personal protective equipment.

“Without this grant, our agency would not be able to continue delivering services to our clients. It’s allowed us to respect and maintain physical distancing measures so we can operate and provide services to our vulnerable clients during this difficult time,” says Taghrid. “We are so grateful to our community for the support. Thank you so much!”

For many non-profits, the pandemic has put a massive strain on their already limited financial reserves with the cancellation of fundraising events due to public health restrictions and lower and less frequent donations.

“From medical and public health needs related to the pandemic response, to the economic uncertainty impacting vulnerable populations, the COVID-19 pandemic is creating unmet needs above and beyond the usual,” says Taghrid. “Non-profits are in a difficult spot. The best way for our community to support our vulnerable populations now and going forward is by donating to non-profit organizations responding to COVID-19 and by volunteering for organizations that are providing critical services in our community.”
