Operation Walk Celebrates 20 Years of Restoring Mobility and Hope

For people living with chronic joint pain, everyday movements as simple as standing and walking can become overwhelming challenges. For patients served by Operation Walk Canada, access to joint replacement surgery can mean the difference between a life limited by pain and one renewed with independence and dignity.

Operation Walk Canada is a volunteer-led organization that provides life-changing joint replacement surgeries to patients in Guatemala and Ecuador, where this sort of treatment is largely inaccessible. Each mission lasts about a week and brings together surgeons, nurses, physiotherapists, and support staff who volunteer their time and expertise to change lives for the better. Every person involved is a volunteer, and they cover their own travel costs to ensure the greatest possible impact.

The 2025 Guatemala Mission saw a team led by Dr. Steven MacDonald and Kristie Vasarhelyi complete a total of 103 joint replacements for 77 patients.

“For 20 years, volunteer medical teams have taken time away from their practices and families to provide joint replacement surgeries for individuals who would otherwise have no access to care,” says Chris Harvey, Fundraising Executive with Operation Walk Canada. “Their commitment has resulted in thousands of life-changing procedures.”

This year marks Operation Walk Canada’s 20th anniversary – a milestone that reflects decades of compassion, collaboration, and belief that access to care should not depend on geography. Founded by Drs. Bourne and Rorabeck, the London-based organization works with established local doctors, physiotherapists, and care providers in Guatemala and Ecuador who identify patients and support their rehabilitation and recovery. Funds raised through donations and community partnerships help pay for medical equipment, supplies, and post-surgical care.

Silvia, a patient who’s benefited from Operation Walk’s work, shares the impact her operation had on her:

“After living my entire life with hip dysplasia, a condition I was born with, I finally feel hopeful and relieved. This is more than just a medical procedure. It’s a positive, life-changing experience that fills me with hope and satisfaction.”

London Community Foundation is proud to support this work through its community of fundholders. In 2024, fundholders collectively granted $29,600 to Operation Walk, helping ensure that volunteers have the tools and support they need to continue their mission. Many individuals involved with Operation Walk are connected to the Foundation as either fundholders, donors, or past or present volunteers.

As Operation Walk Canada continues its mission, it serves as an example of how far-reaching the impact of generosity can be when a community comes together.
