Thousands of children, seniors and vulnerable adults in our community can’t count on the basic need of housing. With rising costs, precarious employment, and a shortage of affordable housing units, more Londoners are living in inadequate housing and shelters than ever before.

Due to a medical condition, Chadwyk Chung struggles to work. Combined with costly medical expenses, it was difficult for him to afford housing in the current market. Fortunately, Homes Unlimited has provided him with a safe, affordable, and accessible place to call home.

“Living with a chronic illness, I face multiple challenges on a day-to-day basis,” says Chadwyck. “I’m very grateful for the Homes Unlimited team who make it possible for tenants like me to live affordably and maintain my independence despite the stresses that can come with an illness such as mine.”

Homes Unlimited is a charitable not-for-profit organization, whose mission is to create and maintain affordable and accessible housing for Londoners with lower incomes including people with challenges or disabilities. Leaders in non-profit housing since 1972 and still growing, they have 522 housing units across eight locations.

In 2019, Homes Unlimited received a loan of $1.62 million from the London Community Foundation Social Impact Fund in order to purchase land for a new, 110 unit mixed demographic affordable housing development at 99 -107 Pond Mills Road that will include one and two-bedroom apartments, with just over 30% of the apartments being wheelchair accessible.

It will also consist of three single-family lots in the mature neighbourhood of Pond Mills, with good access to schools, public transportation, grocery shopping, banks, health care and service agencies. Construction is anticipated to begin late 2020.

“LCF’s Social Impact Fund has proven to be an excellent source of both financial and social returns,” says Vijay Venkatesan, Vice President, Finance & Operations. “It uniquely positions us to support affordable housing initiatives like Homes Unlimited, just one of 11 projects LCF has invested in to tackle London’s housing crisis.”

Housing is the foundation of well-being and is at the root of many other pressing issues such as poverty, mental and physical health, addiction, and employment. When people are provided with a home, they are also given the potential to transform their lives. Homes Unlimited is a perfect example of an organization doing just that.

Thanks to this partnership with LCF’s Social Impact Fund, Homes Unlimited will provide hundreds of families and individuals like Chadwyk with a safe and affordable place to live.
