A Tribute to Richard M. Ivey

Though not a happy note to start the year off, I wanted to share thoughts on what I assume most of you now know, that Richard M. Ivey (Dick to many) passed away on Dec. 28. Dick and indeed, his lovely late wife Beryl, had been friends to LCF for many years. They were always supportive of our emerging strategic directions, demonstrated most recently by Dick's $1 million commitment to Back to the River. Together they seeded several registered charity endowments at LCF - ReForest London, the Urban League, Women's Community House - as well as the Beryl Ivey endowments for the arts and the environment.

I had the rare privilege of working with, being mentored by, and being supported through a lovely friendship with both. In fact, it was through Dick and Beryl that the first position of Director of Development at LCF was made possible, and they convinced the leadership at LCF that I should be the very fortunate candidate.

Over the last many years, I would visit with Dick and he, ever the gracious host, would take me to lunch at The York Club in Toronto. I will always remember Dick's gentle and true love for Beryl. When she started to become ill, he quietly moved her to Toronto and closer to their children.

London as a community should be so very proud of leaders such as the Ivey Family. They were pioneers in philanthropy, strategic thinkers, and visionaries for what our city could and should be.

I am personally saddened by the loss of our last Honorary Director. I will miss sharing hazelnut sorbet with this gracious gentleman.

LCF is making a grant to the Richard and Beryl Ivey Fund. Any memorial gifts received will be put into their fund unless otherwise directed by donors.

Fondly,

Martha
