Wilson Family Foundation

My parents were philanthropic, so philanthropy isn’t new to me, but starting the Wilson Family Foundation allows me to explore and give back in ways I never thought possible. I want to carry on their legacy here in London by giving back what I can, and hope my own children will be inspired to do the same. Although I was born and raised in California, I feel close to London and Canada now, after 25 years here, and more so every day.

I am, however, fairly new to London Community Foundation – and already I like how forward-thinking they are. They have a clear vision of a better London and know how to mobilize different people, talents and resources to make our community a better place for all.

What I love most is the sense of philanthropic community I feel at LCF. Funds and donors can join a cause and make a bigger impact collectively. Being on the Grants Committee also feeds my passion for improving the community we live in, as I learn more and more about the needs around us and the solutions LCF can offer.

Everyone seems to have a “thing” they’re passionate about, a thing they’re good at, a thing they support and live for. I’m still exploring what my thing is, but I think it might be just that – exploring. There is nothing more rewarding to me than to learn about the different ways of giving to various causes.

My wife was a Chinese immigrant to Canada. Thankfully, I was there to help ease her transition – but it always makes me wonder about others who aren't as fortunate, such as refugees in London today. I‘d like to help ensure the process for newcomers is just as smooth as it was for Yi. Knowing they’re someone’s family, and knowing I can do something to help make things easier, are just some of the reasons I felt prompted to get involved with LCF.

There is a great need for philanthropists in the uncertain world we live in today. I feel very fortunate to be in a position where I’m able to give back, and I want to do so now, so that I can see what people like myself – through LCF – can really accomplish in this community. That, to me, feels like a blessing and a mission I’m happy to take on personally and proudly – to improve London for all, and to make a positive impact on the world in whatever way I can.
