(London, ON)- London Community Foundation to host a visit from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, as he spreads his message about continuing to build London as a Smart & Caring Community.

London Community Foundation is honoured to welcome the Governor General to London as he inspires community leaders to unite and engage in philanthropy to facilitate community-wide change. On May 9th the London Community Foundation will host His Excellency’s visit to My Sisters' Place, a local charity that provides resources and support to at-risk women, followed by a luncheon at Sunningdale Golf & Country Club with some of the Foundation’s key stakeholders.

As we approach Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017, the Governor General has challenged Canadians to imagine our country as it could be- a Smart & Caring nation that holds promise for everyone. “Smart” means understanding the needs of our community and using our knowledge and expertise to tackle the issues facing our community. “Caring” is the passion that motivates us to act on our knowledge, facilitating community change and creating equal opportunities for all citizens. By hosting this event, London Community Foundation hopes to engage leaders in our community to begin a dialogue on how we can continue to build London as a Smart & Caring Community.

The Governor General’s visit will also launch the London Community Foundation’s Smart & Caring Community Fund- an unrestricted fund that allows the Foundation to support strategic and innovative granting.

The launch of the London Community Foundation's new Smart & Caring Communities Fund will have an immediate and long-lasting impact. The unrestricted fund will provide a way to engage new and existing donors, rally around community issues that matter, and drive social change to make London an even better place to live," says Ian Bird, CEO of Community Foundations of Canada.

As one of the few communities across Canada selected to host a visit from the Governor General, President and CEO of the London Community Foundation, Martha Powell is honoured that the Foundation’s leaders will have the opportunity to be part of a pivotal moment in the Foundation’s history.

As we enter a new age of philanthropy where impact is key, it is my hope that His Excellency’s message will inspire community leaders to collaborate and engage with us to make London a Smart & Caring Community today and for generations to come,” says Martha.
