Our Street London: A Nice Place To Be
Nov. 10, 2011
There were three Car Free Day events downtown and five in different neigbourhoods around the city this summer.
Ryan Craven from Our Street London says this is just the beginning and is taking the promotion of people-based street design from the celebratory experience of Car Free Day to the practical experience of coordinating community to create permanent change in the built environment.
With their $25,000 Clean Air Challenge Grant, Our Street London is helping reduce emissions and greenhouse gasses and seriously engaging residents, businesses and communities in pro-environmental behaviour change by promoting the economic, social, health, and environmental benefits of people-based street design in a fun and interactive way.
We believe that Londoners will ultimately choose to drive less when our transportation system allows for more opportunities to safely and efficiently cycle, walk, and take public transit.
Through a well-planned strategy, individuals are able to share via blog entries, images, video and other digital content within the context of active transportation, as well as make change through the creation of online petitions to address transportation needs in their specific community. These petitions could be for changes as simple as indicating an intersection with a broken pedestrian signal to a street that could use a bicycle lane.
London Community Foundation is pleased to support Our Street London with a $25,000 grant through the 2011 Clean Air Challenge Grant Program.
