Improving the eco-health of her community

Nov. 24, 2011

With her Vital People grant from the Community Foundation Amber will further her potential by improving her abilities in several areas relevant to her work - specifically site assessment, species selection, data recording and program development.

Amber Cantell is a self-avowed “tree geek” who is passionate about the environment.

Presently, she works as a project manager for Reforest London – a charitable non-profit organization that engages individuals, groups and businesses in planting and caring for trees in neighbourhoods and natural areas throughout London.

As Project Manager, she has been instrumental in increasing planting numbers, improving site assessment procedures, and developing a formal tree aftercare program.

Amber is dedicated to positive environmental change, as evident in previous career experiences such as Green Building Education Coordinator for the Ecology Action Centre, the Well Aware Project Coordinator for Waterloo Region Green Solutions and several other contracts related to restoration ecology, environmental education and agriculture. Furthermore, she recently she won the top national scholarship for graduate research from the Canadian Institute of Planners for her research into creating more walkable and bikeable neighbourhoods.

With her Vital People grant, she plans to obtain an Ecological Land Classification Certification through Bird Studies Canada at the Long Point Waterfowl’s Research and Education Centre in Turkey Point, undergo Certified Seed Collector Training at the Ontario Tree Seed Plant in Argus Ontario, and study Microsoft Access at Fanshawe College.
