Dream It, Be It – Empowering young female newcomers

Aug. 29, 2018

It’s a little bit different than your average day –program. With last year’s program participants leading the charge as Ambassadors this year, Dream It, Be It, a collaboration between Soroptimist International and YMCA, brought female newcomer youth together.

The Soroptimist Dream It, Be It program empowers girls to break cycles of poverty, violence, and abuse by giving them the self-confidence and knowledge they need to achieve success in their future careers and personal lives.

With funding provided by London Community Foundation, United Way Elgin Middlesex and YMCA’s YMAP program, 15 high school-aged young female newcomers spent the day immersed in meaningful career support activities. Over the course of the day, topics like career opportunities, goal achievement, overcoming obstacles and how to move forward after setbacks or failures.

I loved the whole idea of empowering us. They made us feel like no matter our background or situation, we can make it. We can become something successful." - Participant

Speakers from community organizations, like Youth Opportunities Unlimited, Anova, mindyourmind and Let’s Talk Science, gave inspirational speeches about real life experiences, encouraging these young women to follow their dreams despite adversity.

Throughout the day the young women made connections with one another. They tested their tenacity with problem-solving icebreakers and embraced their creativity by painting henna designs on their hands. They truly enjoyed having time to share and get to know one another better.

At the end of the day, these young women felt more confident to saying yes to opportunities, and as a result, confident about their future careers.  Many were inspired by the speakers to pursue a career in a field they are passionate about, with many expressing an interest in having a mentor.

From mental health and healthy relationships to science and education, Dream It, Be It is an exceptional experience, empowering and encouraging young women to pursue their passions and say ‘yes’ to opportunities that come their way.
