2016 Vital People Award: Kathie Chute

Dec. 01, 2016

Kathie is the Child and Youth Program Coordinator at the Learning Disabilities Association of London Region (LDA-LR). Her role is to research program topics, plan program resources and lesson activities for all students who attend programming at LDA-LR. She oversees all program delivery based on the schedule she builds for the current school year. She facilitates programming delivery and works closely with all students and their parents. She oversees all supervision of volunteers, coordination and work assignments.

Thanks to a Vital People grant, Kathie will receive training for “Reading Rocks”- a program for children with learning disabilities as well as others who struggle with reading at their appropriate reading level. Reading Rocks combines the explicit teaching of foundational reading literacy skills including phonics, sight words, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension strategies.

Currently, LDA-LR does not have a reading program. As the majority of students struggle in Math and Literacy, this program will allow more families to benefit from the LDA-LR programming. This opportunity will allow Kathie to access more resources, obtain training and research other programs that are held in the community.

I have dedicated my career to working with students in helping them to build their self-confidence and self-esteem,” says Kathie. “It is the greatest feeling in the world to see I have helped to make a difference in the lives of student’s who struggle daily with their learning difficulties.”
