Yafet Gebremariam Receives 2012 J Allyn Taylor Community Service Award

May. 02, 2012

London Community Foundation is pleased to announce Catholic Central High School student Yafet Gebremariam is the recipient of the 2012 J Allyn Taylor Award.

This award honours a high school student who demonstrates exemplary commitment and outstanding leadership in his or her community. Yafet will accept the award during a presentation at Youth Volunteer Appreciation Night on Wednesday May 2nd at Wolf Performance Hall.

Upon his arrival to Canada in October 2011, Yafet immediately sought opportunities to get involved in his new community. Within a short amount of time he became very active within his Kipps Lane community, volunteering at neighbourhood family events and participating in a bi-weekly Life Resource Centre Cooking Club for young men, and active in the broader community as a volunteer with YMCA’s YMAP program.

Yafet takes on both big and small volunteer roles with equal levels of commitment. For example, when he ran the Black History Awareness event for young children at the Y, his peers selected him to lead. Although some of his team members could not attend to help at the final event, he persevered and ultimately demonstrated adaptability under pressure and a level of professionalism that sometimes even seasoned and more mature volunteers lack.

“There were many great candidates for the J Allyn Taylor award this year. We were suitably impressed with Yafet’s community contributions, but absolutely won over by his huge heart and his passion for his newly adopted country. He is truly making a difference to those around him. It is clear that he is a phenomenal yet humble leader.” Dania Ajami, co-chair of the Community Foundation’s youth committee and coordinator of the award selection process.

Yafet was nominated by Clara Madrenas, YMAP Facilitator at YMCA.

Yafet is donating $500 of the $1,000 award money to the Refugee Assistance Program - a program he has personally benefitted from – which is administered by the Colborne Street United Church. The rest will be kept in trust and used for his post-secondary education.

London Community Foundation would like to recognize all 2012 J Allyn Taylor Award nominees: Ayla Alves Jason Boytchuk, Cindy Corrales, David Franco, Lucas Goodenough, Rebekah Hessel, Kezia Kirkham, Alysha Morrison, Frediana Nyandwi, Cameron Patterson, Sonachi Vzoegwu, Ling Xi Liao
