CFC and Manulife Establish Welcome Fund for Syrian Refugees

Jan. 13, 2016

As thousands of Syrian Refugees enter our country, we are proud to be part of a national movement supporting the integration of these new Canadians into our community. In December 2015, Community Foundations of Canada established a Welcome Fund for Syrian Refugees with Manulife Financial. Manulife has graciously partnered with Community Foundations of Canada on this initiative providing seed funding of $500,000. The Community Foundation network will match this donation at the local level for a total investment of $1 million to communities across Canada supporting refugees. Recently, CN has also generously contributed $5 million to the Fund.

The Welcome fund was set up to address the immediate needs for transitional housing, job training and skills development as identified by the Canadian Government. The welcome fund will support communities across Canada who will be welcoming new members in the coming months. Community foundations will direct contributions to local charitable organizations in each community where they will have the greatest impact.

London Community Foundation has been taking leadership locally by working in partnership with other organizations such as the United Way London and Middlesex, Cross Cultural Learner Centre, the City of London and the London Intercommunity Health Centre.

“It is essential that we do everything to we can to help these new Canadians settle in our community,” says Martha Powell, President & CEO, London Community Foundation. “We can only imagine the hardships they’ve endured. We must work together and welcome them into our community with open hearts.”

If you would like more information on how you can help local Syrian refugees, contact the Foundation and we will be happy to assist you.
