Thomas G. Whealy Fund

Sep. 30, 2009

When Bob Siskind learned of plans for a Cinderella Ball in honour of his friend's 60th birthday, he knew his gift would have to be equally imaginative.

"Tom has contributed for years to the Boys' and Girls' Club and was a supporter of London Community Foundation," says Bob. "A fund in his honour was a perfect way to combine those two interests,"

As a past chair of the Community Foundation, Bob was familiar with the many fund options available. He knew that establishing a designated fund would be a perfect way for Tom's many friends and family to pay tribute to his involvement in the community. The fund was to be a surprise, so no formal notification was sent to party-goers.

"We relied on word of mouth and phone calls," says Bob, "and the response was phenomenal."

Donations totalled $10,000!

"A classy, creative birthday gift that will leave a lasting legacy for thousands of needy youth," says Don Donner, executive director of Boys' and Girls' Club. "We are overwhelmed with Tom's kindness and the support of his family and friends."

And how do Tom and his wife Sandie, feel about the fund and the behind-the-scenes shenanigans?

"We are impressed that everyone managed to keep it a secret, but we are even more impressed with the generous response of our friends and family. We're hopeful we can grow the fund over the years."
