Youth in Philanthropy
Youth in Philanthropy (YIP) is a growing movement across Canada, with more than 55 YIP committees in Canada, all associated with the community foundation in their area.
In London, YIP is a dynamic group of youth between the ages of 15 to 25 who have come together from diverse backgrounds to actively participate in philanthropy and community development.
Activities of YIP include:
- Volunteering: Visit and engage with community youth organizations.
- Public Relations: Increase youth awareness of London Community Foundation and YIP’s role within the Foundation and the community.
- Awards: Select the annual recipient for the J. Allyn Taylor Community Service award, presented to an individual who has contributed to their community through their volunteering achievements.
- Grantmaking: Review and discuss grant guidelines for the Acorn Fund for Youth, review grant proposals and make recommendations to the Grants Committee of London Community Foundation and finally, perform follow-up evaluations of grants made and report to the Grants Committee.
Some YIP approved grants include funding for a summer recreation program including a community carnival day Limberlost Chaplaincy; support for a Collective Kitchen program for teenage moms at Glen Cairn Community Resource Centre; and funding for a breakfast program and early dismissal school day activities through South London Neighbourhood Resource Centre.
YIP is a hands-on experience that benefits both the participating students and local charities.
