Engage! London Is an awesome program. It encompasses teamwork, creativity, business acumen, leadership, growth … and fun! It’s a treat to be part of this and it is a fulfilling experience since all that you do is focused on helping the community!
I personally felt that the experience was a like a “mini MBA”. I am pleased to say that the project we worked on - Meals on Wheels London (MOWL) - launched a social enterprise because of our team’s work! There are no limits on what you can do with this program. Think big. Go big!
Teaming: To get the most out of this program, it is important to build a great team. Every team goes through the storm-form-norm-perform stages so the faster you can do that, the better. Our team, once formed, decided to divide various focus areas into the team members. This way we could have independent work streams and be more productive while allowing each “expert” to own a piece of the solution.
The Solution: As a team, you are expected to deliver a report to your client (charity). This is the bare minimum requirement so feel free to overachieve! Our team spent time with the charity to understand its operations and culture. We had a variety of skills and we leveraged them well, creating maximum impact.
It’s all about you: No one will “grade” or evaluate you through the program and it’s up to you to do your best. Personally, I work much better in a free-flowing environment, which Engage! London provides. While it may sound like a cliché, you get what you put in. See challenges (internal and external) as opportunities to hone your skills. This is your chance to shine as a leader.
Personally, I really enjoyed my Engage! London journey. At the end of the program, I felt like I made a difference in our community. I learned much more about non-profits and realized that they are not that different from for-profit organizations. I met many young, intelligent professionals who were like-minded. Above all, I learned that when we serve, great things happen. The launch of “The Village Table” (Social Enterprise – MOWL) made me realize that serendipity is real! I highly recommend getting “engaged” with Engage! London.
