It may be 30 years since Alma College closed its doors – and a decade since its historical home was destroyed in a fire – but the school’s active and caring International Alumnae Association is staying connected to its St. Thomas roots.

When the alumnae from Alma College originally reached out to inquire about creating a fund with London Community Foundation, I was a bit surprised. While they were a beloved, private, all-girl school in St. Thomas for over a 100 years, the school had been shut down since 1988.  I was intrigued, wanting to learn more about how LCF could help them achieve their goal.

The wonderful women, I soon learned, had been independently and informally donating their money to give out a scholarship yearly to a graduating female high school student in St. Thomas.  Joining forces with the Foundation seemed like a great way to create a legacy of Alma College for the future female generation.

It’s quite beautiful, really, seeing these women rally together to start this fund. The Alma College Scholarship Fund started with an initial gift of $9,000.  Their goal is to get it to $25,000 in hopes of increasing the scholarship amount, currently $500/year, to $1,000 and to create a strong capital base to ensure the scholarship fund can live on long after they are gone.

Taking the personal and valuable experience these women had during their time at Alma College, they truly want to make a lasting impact for years to come. I know I speak for the entire Foundation when I say how thrilled I am to see generations of women supporting and investing in the education of future generations of women. What a beautiful and special testament to the character and value of their Alma College experience!
