About Us
London Community Foundation is one of Ontario's oldest Community Foundation’s. Like all community foundation’s, we make a difference because of the generosity of our donors. Gifts are invested and held forever in an endowment. Through prudent investment and due diligence in grantmaking the Foundation is able to ensure that our donors wishes are respected in perpetuity.
This creates a lasting legacy that not only addresses the needs of today, but also the needs of tomorrow. We are not a charity supporting our own programs, but a means to support causes and activities as diverse as the community at large. We do not compete with other charitable organizations; rather, we enhance their ability to serve the community.
Gifts to London Community Foundation have been made to provide a tribute or memorial for a special person, to celebrate or commemorate an event, to ensure annual income to a charity, or as a means to continue a donor's lifelong support of charitable organizations or causes.
Our Story
The idea of establishing a Community Foundation in London started in 1943 with one person: J. Allyn Taylor. Taylor, recently transferred to London from Winnipeg by Canada Trust, saw the potential of building a permanent endowment that could benefit many charitable activities after witnessing the actions of the Winnipeg Foundation during the depression in the 1920’s and early 30’s.
By 1954, he had overseen the establishment and incorporation of London Foundation. However, it was nothing more than a legal entity with virtually no capital. The assets of the Foundation at December 31st 1979 totalled $5,585.23, the net balance of capital from 1952 – 1979.
In 1979 after retiring as President of Canada Trust Taylor made reactivation of the London Community Foundation his primary project.
Thanks to Taylor, the inaugural Board of Directors and the donations of so many who believe in the power of endowment, the Foundation continues to thrive and grants millions of dollars each year into the surrounding community.
